Paper bag making

Christmas is just a few days away so we thought we would share one of our favourite tricks, how to make lovely paper-bags!

Today is also the last day that Freya is with us in the studio, and she is phenomenal with all kinds of paper cutting and folding so we thought that we would ask her to make a little "how - to" and here it is;

1. You will need a glue stick, a hole puncher, paper (magazines, wrapping paper etc works perfectly) and some string and a scissor.

2. Start by folding over the long side of the paper by about an inch and glue down.

3.Turn the paper over and almost fold in half, leaving about 1 inch extra. Fold this extra over and glue

4.Now we will make the bottom of the bag, fold up about a third of the way up. Fold this out and crease down. Fold up over half way, see image. Either glue, tape or close the bottom with a nice sticker.

5. To make the sides of the bag we need to fold them on both sides.

7. Make holes for the handles with a hole puncher on both sides and make handles out of ribbon or string.

Voila, done!

Rough Trade East Christmas Market

I will take part of Rough Trade East Christmas market on the 8th of December. There will be live music, great food and design so come down to Brick Lane and join us!

The first one hundred customers through the door on the night will be given a Rough Trade goodie bag containing a small gift from each of our vendors and Freia, Serena and I will offer a wrapping service for all the customers' and also show ways of making lovely paper bags.

Collectionistas and Kavel Rafferty with The Mill Co. Project

I was asked by my lovely friend Kavel Rafferty (of which I designed and photographed the PorTables with) to come up with a print for a Risograph print show at The Mill Co. Project London

This is what she wrote for us to get inspired:

I love the obsession inherent in collecting. The completist, whether finding that all-

important last football sticker to finish their sticker book or one of those committed men

(more often than not) standing on a rainy platform furtively scribbling down train

numbers. The amateur hobbyist, complete with vast selection of frogs/bottle

tops/records/paper fruit wrappers/tram tickets/whatever; I always admired those kids at

school who had a million different shaped and coloured erasers (they were called

rubbers then, before Aids)... I loved their dedication and their neatness and I got dizzy

just trying to imagine how much pocket money they got.

It ́s all valid.

There something religious about this devotion. It ́s repetitive, inspiring and, well,

ultimately pointless. Long live the anoraks!

this inspired me to get my camera out around my home, as I live with 3 collectors other than myself:

My son Sam's bley blades, he was very keen to make them all spin for me...... this is his design once I had taken all the photographs...

I fell upon this beautiful shop after a nights stay in central Nancy, France. I felt like a child again, only this time I was delighting over every detail from the wrapping paper to the jars, to the packaging, tins, boxes and graphics. A shop that has been around since the early 1800's bringing a smile and a happy face to everyone that walks in.... what a lovely job!

Spain this summer was a wonderful holiday where I did not think about work and instead just hung out with my kids, and swam and eat good food, and lavished in the hot sunshine. I had to go off on the odd ramble around the village with my camera, the light was so wonderful, so here are some interesting abstracts with some wonderful tiles and old doors for inspiration! I would love a dress inspired by all of these designs, its the mix and juxtaposition of colours and pattern that grabbed my attention here!

Quick preview of the prototype cabinets

Here are a couple of phone pics from my recent meeting at Vital Arts about the cabinets for the Royal London hospital (Children's ward). Thankfully we had a prototype made up before pressing the button on the manufacture as we now know colours need to be adjusted a lot to cope with the formica product and how it absorbs and alters the colour from ones original.

I then went to Surface View in Reading to approve the correct colours.... it's all a process, and now I have all my fingers and toes crossed for the production to run smoothly and for the final cabinet to look beautiful. I'll update you all once the project is complete.

Table top and cabinet front designs continued....

I have played with the way Big Ben is situated by the River and I wanted to include the famous helicopter as The Royal London is renowned for this emergency service - and I couldn't miss out the buses and black cabs! I would have liked to use an old Routemaster Bus though- and despite the fact I have lots of photos of them from previous projects, I did not have the right angle for this image.

I am now in the second stage of the table top and cabinet process, the designs have been submitted and I am scheduled to see the first sample of the tables and the cabinet in 2 weeks from now. The idea around the tables, was to pull in the focus from the playful panoramic view of London (on the curtain) to a close up more personal image. These images give you an idea of what I have done. I wish I had filmed us making these boats and trying to photograph them, it always turns into quite a comedy act when trying to capture something in the 'moment' with the wind, and looming rain, all adding to the crazyness of the day, and more often than not I need to change lenses half way through in order to get all angles and depths of field covered!

The Royal London Hospital commissioned by Vital Arts

I have just completed a brilliant project for Barts and The London Children's hospital, in consulation with children, parents and patients, commissioned by Vital Arts. I have found the whole process, and working with the Vital Arts Team very fulfilling, both on a personal note and creatively. The main reason for this is because there is a real 'purpose' to the job.

My whole pitch was giving the child the 'prize' of the image, so rather than the visitor being bombarded with textile curtains in a ward, they are greeted by coloured panels; and the children, when having to be private, have the curtain drawn to reveal a made up London skyline. There are insects and animals hiding in the foreground and plenty to keep the boys and the girls distracted with boats and pirate ships on the water.
It has been a real challenge to ensure we can get the quality of print and saturation of colour on the finished article, the manufacturers have worked very hard with the odd prod from me to ensure the finished product is beautiful. I am very excited about actually seeing them all installed. I shall update you when the hospital opens. And I have more exciting news to follow this post on a further commission linked to this.

I love factories!

I love printing factories and potteries, and last week I got to visit both all in one go, in Stoke on Trent. I think I love them so much because of my college days of being in the print room all the time, and the fact that the machines and utensils, switches and screens, are all being used. I get a wonderful sense of purpose in a factory, things getting made, jobs getting done, Lovely!

I am going to see if I can dig up some other factories for my pleasure.

We caught the train down to the East coast for the day (speedy gonsalez from St Pancras). I got all the boys to make paper aeroplanes on the journey...... and we nearly forgot to photograph them flying off the pier!

I am working on a project (which I will tell you about soon) where I need paper aeroplanes, so the boys came up with some great options, and we had multi colours..... I see a rainbow of paper planes ... coming soon :)

Hey! Pure new wool all the way from Germany

Last year we discovered the wonderful Michael Hoff and his felt products at Hey Sign, in Germany. The pure new wool used to create the products is so sumptuous, whenever the new stock of 'Carry' bags come through the door we all immediately add one to our mental wish lists! We have up dated the collection of alphabet key rings, more colours and more letters. And as an added extra this year we have opted for the cute Christmas tree decorations too. Ella Doran and Edition Paumes

Ella Doran will be teaming up with the Japanese based publishers Edition Paumes to launch their brand new book - London Family Style - during the London Design Festival. To celebrate the book launch Ella and Fumie, from Edition Paumes, will be hosting a tea party on Saturday 25th September from 2pm-6pm. A section of Cheshire St will be closed and many of the other shops along the street will be taking part with their own individual events.

We are very pleased to be included in a new exhibition in The Millennium Gallery in Sheffield. Teatopia focuses its interest on the national past time - partaking in tea! A nice cuppa! A builders brew! A light distinguished infusion! Our ever popular Vintage Plates tray will be exhibited and on sale in the gallery shop. Also showing at the gallery is Watercolour in Britain and in its honour our brilliant Artists Tools tray will be also be appearing in the gallery shop - perfect for any inspired artist!

Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Our good friends at Rocket Galley will be showing a collection of beautiful furniture by Jens Risom. Born in Copenhagen Risom has worked in collaboration with Rocket and Benchmark to produce this small collection of his 1950's and 1960's designs. With just the right measure of style combined with function the pieces are perfectly crafted. And the coloured upholstery is a delight!

Not one but TWO!

Today we have been grinning like Cheshire cats (how apt!) as last night at the Grand Designs Awards we won not one but two awards! We had been nominated for the Best Wallpaper category for our 'Geo' wallpaper, we were so happy to win this category and then to our amazement we won the Evening Standard Product of the Year Award. And so today's Friday Featured is our brand new, shiny and very heavy award trophies. We would like to thank the judges, especially Barbara Chandler who said such wonderful things in her presentation speech. We are very proud! Have a fun weekend!

This Friday we got a delivery of eco - conscious products that make great gifts. The first is a silver birch tree which you can unpackage and plant to offset your carbon footprint. The second is a bees wax candle, once you have burned the wax use the terracotta pot the candle was in to sew the seeds provided. We are very happy to have been featured in Homes and Interiors Scotland. Imagine our surprise when visiting a tiny village in East Lothian we stumbled across an image of our Geo collection - we think we may have scared the locals with our whoops of delight!
